A computer technician is someone who specializes in computer repair, maintenance, installation and equipment. Computer is a general term and includes everything from desktop computers to super computer monitoring changes in the Earth's atmosphere. There are four types of computer technicians: repair, networking, infrastructure, and server . The four technicians have the same background and skills. Jobs that specialize in different aspects of computer technology require additional education and experience.

A computer technician skilled in repair is usually trained in general hardware structures, how components work together and diagnoses. To work in this field, most people have taken a short course in computer hardware, called A + Certification. This 12-week course covers basic background, technology, and problem solving skills needed to fix common problems.

Additionally, special programs are available for laptop repair. Manufacturers often provide courses about their own products for technicians who work in registered service centers. This technician learns how to make approved repairs and identifies unauthorized repairs.



Types of Computer Technician Tasks

A computer repair technician checks computers, laptops, monitors, and printers to determine what the problem is. They are looking for damaged parts, burned components or other things. Once they have diagnosed the problem, they can repair the unit or replace damaged parts with new ones.

A network computer technician has received training in networking, installing system configurations and troubleshooting. They usually complete a community or college career program on a computer network. A network computer technician is responsible for the initial set up and maintenance of computer networks. This includes both hardware and software components. For a day, they monitor network activity, install software patches, allocate resources to meet different needs and manage printer servers.

An infrastructure computer technician is focused on the design and implementation of large computer networks. They have a university degree in computer science or computer networking. Part of their responsibility is to determine the correct location for computer equipment. This location must provide the ability to manage heat and power issues related to computer networks.

A server computer technician specialized in installation, scoping and management of large server farms. This location has a large number of servers running simultaneously to meet client needs. A server technician who usually has a university degree and is certified in server technology. They are responsible for deciding what type of equipment is needed, installation, configuration, and implementing the service.
